There is no real point writing a long, complicated, business plan - the longer your plan is, in fact, the less likely people are to read it. You need a straight-forward business plan template to enable you to quickly set out your position in every part of the business. Ideally, for a small or medium-sized company, your written plan should be 15 or 20 pages maximum. Remember that you can always support the main text with all the appendixes and references that you think it will need.

If you are writing a business plan for management planning purposes, be specific about what goals you wish to achieve. Do you want to grow the business, create an exit strategy, and develop a new product?

For many, the purpose of business planning is to get funding for a start-up company or to grow an existing business by buying real estate, investing in equipment, creating a new product, or approaching a new market. If you are writing a business plan to get funding, you need to create a statement about the purpose of the funding, and how you will pay back the loaned amount or grow the company, if the funding is through equity investors.

Running your own business means taking more risks than you do if you are working for someone else. If the business fails, you could stand to lose far more than your job.

There is no longer any doubt that to survive in the present market you need to plan; so why do so many businesses race towards failure without bothering?
